Dede, I heard that Phillip had passed while we were out of town on vacation. I want you to know that I often thought of the strength and bravery that Phillip possessed to face and fight the battle that he did. You also are one of the strongest people I know to have fought along beside him. I’m glad to have known Phillip and I’ll always remember him for his strength and bravery. He’s going to be missed by many. My prayers are with you and your family.

I am a Shuttle driver for WFU and Dede was the first driver that I met. She was really nice and I enjoyed her training me. I was leaving work one day in my personal car and got a flat tire. I called AAA and sat there waiting for them to arrive. A facilities truck pulled up beside me and the guy asked if I had a jack, to which I replied "yes, but i'm waiting on AAA". He said call them and cancel it, and proceeded to change my tire. I asked if I could give him a couple dollars he simply said "No, my wife loves you and that's all I need!!!! I had no idea Phillip was Dede's husband but I was thankful for his help! From that point on, he always greeted me with a smile and kind word. I really admired him because he never showed evidence of his struggle with his health. If you did not know his situation, you would never know because he was always upbeat and smiling!! He will be missed and his family will be in my prayers.

Phillip was such a wonderful guy. When I worked third shift at Wake Forest, he used to stop to say hello when coming to work. After moving to first shift, we would see each other and he always had a smile or an arm raise to say hello. When Dede began working at the University, he made sure I knew that she was his wife and told me all about her. You could see the pride and true love in his eyes when he talked about her. Only if we could all have such a wonderful marriage as they had. I am going to miss him a great deal. Dede, I hope you find a peace in your heart and have a sense of satisfaction, knowing that you did everything you could to make his life as easy as possible in his last years. There was never a doubt that you were soul mates and that you would have given your life to save him. I am praying for Phillip's family, hoping that in the coming days and years, you will reflect on his life and understand that everything he did was for his family. He loved all of you...just as you loved him. Rest in Peace Friend...I will miss you.
