Obituary of Shirley Hardin Black

April 8, 1934 - April 17, 2021 Shirley Mae Hardin Black, 87, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday morning, surrounded by her daughters at Forsyth Medical Center. Born April 8, 1934 in Rutherford County, NC to Boyd Newton and Rulene Greene Hardin, who preceded her in death. She grew up in Shelby, NC where she attended Shelby High School. For 33 years she was the wife of Curtis Black and co-owner of Black Sand Company. She retired and lived in The Villages, FL from 1999-2008. While living in Florida, she obtained her real estate license and sold real estate for awhile. Due to her health, she moved back to Winston-Salem to be near her family. Shirley was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. She loved to travel, especially to the beach. She loved to watch sunrises and sunsets. Her biggest joy was being around her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her GiGi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Curtis Black; great-granddaughter, Caroline Rider; brother, Bud Hardin and sister, JoAnn Markland. Surviving are her three daughters, Cindy Shoaf and Mark of Winston-Salem, Sandra Black and Tommy of Clermont, FL, and Sherry Hohl of Belmont, NC; granddaughters, Diana Rider and husband, Allen, Sarah Archie and husband, Cory; grandsons, Luke Mathis and Wesley Leiphart; great-grandchildren, Elise and Leo Rider and Elijah Archie; two sisters, Debra Petersen and Patricia Whitaker of Greensboro, NC. Shirley's family would like to express their gratitude to their mother's outstanding caregivers, Kim Patton and Patricia Sheffield. Mama loved and appreciated them so much. A memorial service will be held at Friedberg Moravian Church.
