Obituary of Michael James Cassels

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother went to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of December 18, 2019 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Michael was raised is Corpus Christi, Texas and came to North Carolina in 1987. He enjoyed wood working, surf fishing at the beach, especially at Padre Island, Texas, classic county music, and loved being with his family. He worked in the oil fields of Texas; was a roadie working with Willie Nelson; and worked many years at Carolina Fence in Winston-Salem. For the last several years Mike worked doing carpentry and enjoyed being a handyman. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Quayle and Cayce Wilkinson Cassels, a sister Patricia Duke, and his best friend/brother Michael “Monk” Munson. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Cassels, and children Beth Gillespie (Rodney), Charlene Wilmoth (Jonathan); son Curtis Evans (Kendra), all of the Triad; and stepson Billy Porche (Amanda) of Dallas, Texas. Grandchildren Savannah Roark, Katelyn Anderson, Josh, Nathaniel, and Colten Wilmoth, Harper Evans, Breanna, Zoey, and Gage Porche. Also, one great-grandson Chance McDuffie, as well as his goddaughter Kylene Stanton. He was affectionately known as “Mike Cassels” and Papaw by his grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters and brothers: Alecia Rumfield (Bill) of Dilley, Texas; Cayce (Kay) Cassels of Houston, Texas; and Cynthia Cassels Littrell of Meadville, Mississippi; and Quayle Cassels Jr. of Meadville, Mississippi. And life long best friend Butch Brown of Corpus Christi,Texas. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. A celebration of Life service will be held on December 22, 2019 from 2-4 pm at Wayside Baptist Church of Walnut Cove, 120 Circle Drive, Walnut Cove, NC 27052 The family would like to give their thanks and appreciation to Trellis Hospice Care.
